The spotlight is on him, and Adrian Newey knows this very well, yet the Englishman does not intend to rush into deciding his next destination in Formula 1. And so, after a day of testing at Mugello last March 25th, the former Red Bull took part in the Historic Monaco GP.
Yesterday, the Englishman took to the track for the first free practice sessions of the event behind the wheel of a Lotus 49B. The single-seater, entrusted in 1968 to Andretti, Rindt, and Hill, falls into category D of the event.
Free practice for the 2024 Monaco Historic GP:
As for the other series, it was the Lotus that marked this first day of free practice by securing the first two positions in the series B named after “Graham Hill”. This category boasts 33 competitors, including Joseph Colasacco, winner of the 2004 and 2022 editions. The American, driving a rare 1964 Ferrari 1512, secured third place in the Monaco Friday session.
In series A1 “Louis Chiron”, reserved for pre-war cars, Irishman Paddins Dowling emerged victorious at the wheel of a 1936 ERA R5B. Behind him were the two Englishmen Bailey (Bugatti 35C) and Birch (Maserati 4CM).
Series A2, named after Juan Manuel Fangio, features 25 front-engined cars built before 1961. Among these are over ten Maseratis, the blue Gordini of Jean-Jacques Bally, and the extremely rare Ferrari 246 Dino driven by Claudia Hürtgen, a former German GT racing star now residing in Monte Carlo. Also on track in the same class is actor Stéphane de Groodt, driving a 1958 Maserati 250F. Before embarking on his cinematic career, the Frenchman raced in Formula 3.
