Luigi Mazzola’s comments
These are the statements of the former engineer: “If Adrian Newey does not come, it will be a problem, but it will also be a problem if he does come.”
“A Technical Director is always present, takes charge of the team, starts to understand who the right people are, and becomes a point of reference for everyone, from the drivers to the Team Principal: it is a top-level role. It seems to me, however, that Adrian [Newey] does not have much desire to go to Italy, in the case of Ferrari, to stay there from morning to night and start fixing this team.” – the former Ferrari team member explained.
“In my opinion, the matter is a bit broader: if he were to go to Aston Martin or other English teams, I can also imagine that he would do a better job, in terms of presence. At Ferrari, I have this question mark: it would mean that he would have to come with people he trusts, who he considers competent and who would do the kind of work I mentioned earlier; otherwise, I see it as a bit bleak,” Luigi Mazzola concluded.
Clearly, Adrian Newey’s arrival in Maranello, regardless of the importance of the role – there is also talk of a “super consultant” position – would be a great move for Scuderia Ferrari: not only would they have an important resource, but they would also have taken it away from their rivals.
As Luigi Mazzola stated, on the other hand, one cannot expect a total reconstruction job just by bringing in the former Red Bull figure.
In short, letting a genius like Adrian Newey slip away would certainly not be a smart move, but securing his ideas would not be a guarantee of success.
