Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali admitted to being surprised that it is still not possible to organize a Grand Prix in Germany. Given the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix, many Formula 1 fans hoped for the return of the sport to one of the historic German circuits, Hockenheimring and Nurburgring above all. Unfortunately, however, it will remain only a desire.
The Formula 1 CEO explained in a recent interview for German weekly sports magazine published in Hamburg, Sport Bild: “If I don’t make a call myself, I see and hear little from Germany. They talk, they talk, they talk, but in the end you need facts” – the former Ferrari boss added.
Stefano Domenicali seems surprised by this behavior from Germany as everyone would like a return of Formula 1 to a country that has a special place in the history of the sport: “It’s a mystery to me how you can’t build a business around a Grand Prix these days. But if they do it well, we will do a race again in Germany.” – he confirmed.
“It can be said that money is not exactly easy to find in Germany. In 2019, the last regular German Grand Prix was at the Hockenheimring and Mercedes supported that race financially. Another German Grand Prix was held in 2020 as an alternative track due to the Covid-19 pandemic” – said the Formula 1 CEO.
Stefano Domenicali pointed out that “the Grand Prix must be worthwhile for all parties. We cannot cover all the costs” – the former Ferrari boss concluded.

An imminent return of Germany to the Formula 1 calendar therefore seems difficult for the near future. In this last period, given the growing interest of the sport, many states are requesting the possibility to host a Grand Prix by increasingly closing their doors to venues like the Nürburgring or the Hockenheimring.
