F1 | Leclerc enjoys the battle with Hamilton and sends a message to rivals: “You can trust him”
Charles Leclerc commented on his performance at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix in Formula 1, reflecting on the long and thrilling duel with his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. The Monegasque driver finished in fourth place, but his battle with the British driver was one of the highlights of a race ultimately won by Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Leclerc reflects on the duel with Hamilton
This was one of the main topics addressed by Charles Leclerc during the post-race interviews at the Shanghai weekend. He explained that he thoroughly enjoyed the on-track battle, even if it might not have been perceived the same way within the team. “I really enjoyed it, even though perhaps inside the team it wasn’t the same. These cars are beautiful to drive in race conditions, and I think it turned out to be a very good race in the end. Lewis was simply stronger, and I’m happy that he claimed the podium, even if naturally I’m disappointed not to be there myself. I believe he is a driver you can genuinely trust when you battle against him,” Charles Leclerc stated.
He also emphasized the fairness and respect in their competition. “The duel between us was very fair. Regarding overtakes, I think everyone is beginning to understand how to manage the battery and all the other aspects of the car. Now we are able to overtake more easily on the outside, given that these cars are very different from those of the past. We will definitely need to work on making qualifying more interesting because the feeling is that something is still missing,” Charles Leclerc added.
Overall, the battle between the two Ferrari drivers demonstrated both competitive spirit and mutual respect, offering fans a thrilling spectacle while underlining the technical progress made by the Maranello team so far in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Charles Leclerc’s comments regarding “trust” serve as a subtle nod to the maturity required to race for Scuderia Ferrari, especially as the team looks to close the gap to a dominant Mercedes. By highlighting that his Maranello teammate is a driver he can fight without fearing erratic or dangerous moves, the Monegasque is setting a high standard for the team’s internal culture. This “clean” rivalry is exactly what Fred Vasseur needs to ensure both cars reach the finish line while still pushing each other to the absolute limit. As the championship heads to Japan, this mutual respect could be Ferrari’s secret weapon in the development war; two elite drivers working in sync—even when trying to beat one another—will only accelerate the SF-26’s progress. The “trust” Charles Leclerc speaks of isn’t just about safety on track; it’s about the collective belief that both drivers can lead the Prancing Horse back to the top step.
