Oscar Piastri’s double
Oscar Piastri’s well-deserved victory on the streets of Baku marked his second win of the 2024 Formula 1 season (and, of course, his second-ever in Formula 1). The McLaren driver has now joined Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and his own teammate, Lando Norris, in the two-win club this year. Leading them all, with seven victories, is of course Max Verstappen, as a results of Red Bull’s strong start to the championship.
Welcome Back, 2012
In 2024, there have been seven different winners so far, including Carlos Sainz’s triumph for Scuderia Ferrari at the Albert Park circuit in Australia and George Russell’s win for Mercedes at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. However, the most striking statistic is the number of double winners: it’s the first time since 2012 that five drivers have won at least two races in a single Formula 1 season.
A Close Finish?
That 2012 Formula 1 season, famous for having seven different winners in the first seven races, saw Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Janson Button, and Mark Webber each winning at least twice. With the current points system (25 points per win), the only other comparable situation is 2010, when five drivers ended the season with two or more victories. In both cases, the world title was decided at the final race of the season, which means that this year’s contenders have been warned.
