Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a sensational surprise victory in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix to bring Mercedes’ domination to an end. Verstappen’s win was founded on his car being kinder to its tyres than the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas and the Dutchman capitalised brilliantly.
Hamilton fought back from early struggles to catch and pass Bottas for second place with two laps to go. Pirelli’s softer tyre compounds coupled with track temperatures nudging 43C effectively nobbled the prospects of the all-powerful Mercedes.
Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was outstanding in taking fourth on a one-stop strategy. Charles was able to manage the tyre and get to the end ahead of Alex Albon and the Racing Point of Nico Hulkenberg and Lance Stroll who seemed faster on Friday and Saturday.
A much more difficut race for Sebastian Vettel who tried to recover after a spin in the start but was not able to finish in the points. Only a P12 for Sebastian, behind the two Alpha Tauri cars of Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly.
It was an unexpectedly thrilling race, a fitting testament to the occasion as F1 celebrated 70 years since the F1 championship started at Silverstone in 1950.
