Formula 1 has confirmed that 2027 pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain from February 24 to 27, giving teams four days of track running before the new championship begins at the same circuit in March.
The announcement follows the publication of the 2027 calendar and confirms a return to a more familiar winter-testing programme. Unlike the extended preparations required for the new technical regulations in 2026, which also included running in Barcelona, the paddock will head back to the Middle East for its principal pre-season test.
When will 2027 F1 pre-season testing take place?
The 2027 F1 pre-season test will run for four consecutive days from Wednesday, February 24, until Saturday, February 27. Teams will use that period to complete their first substantial mileage with their new cars before the start of the championship.
Drivers and engineers will focus on understanding car behaviour, checking reliability and analysing performance across different fuel loads and tyre programmes. The test will also give manufacturers an opportunity to evaluate their Power Units under sustained track conditions.
For Ferrari, the four-day programme will provide the first major opportunity to assess whether its winter development work has delivered the expected results. Data gathered in Bahrain will begin shaping the team’s technical direction before competitive running starts, with further coverage available in the site’s Ferrari technical analysis section.
Why Formula 1 chose Bahrain for 2027 testing
The Bahrain International Circuit has become a preferred pre-season venue because it combines a permanent Formula 1 track with generally stable weather conditions. Predictable temperatures reduce the risk of major weather-related interruptions and help teams collect more consistent data across their programmes.
Sakhir’s hot and abrasive asphalt also provides a demanding environment for evaluating tyre stress and degradation. Teams can use long runs to study how the tyres respond over a stint while simultaneously checking cooling, reliability and overall car performance.
The four-day test will also establish the first lap-time benchmarks of the season. However, each team will run its own fuel levels, engine modes and development programme, leaving questions over which cars are showing their genuine potential and which are keeping performance in reserve.
2027 F1 season begins with Bahrain Grand Prix
Teams will have approximately two weeks between the conclusion of testing and the opening race weekend. The 2027 Formula 1 season is scheduled to begin with the Bahrain Grand Prix from March 12 to 14, allowing the paddock to return to a circuit where it will already have accumulated extensive recent data.
Bahrain’s position as both the testing venue and championship opener will make preparation particularly important. Any reliability problem or performance weakness identified during the test will need to be addressed quickly before the teams return to Sakhir for the first competitive weekend.
What else is changing on the 2027 F1 calendar?
Formula 1 will again stage 24 Grands Prix in 2027, while the Sprint programme will expand to 10 events. Portimão and Istanbul are also set to return, adding two established venues to the schedule.
The confirmed calendar nevertheless retains alternative options if adjustments become necessary, with Imola, Zandvoort and Barcelona identified as potential replacements. Further details are available in the breakdown of Formula 1’s 2027 calendar contingency plan.
Before attention turns to those 24 race weekends, Bahrain will provide the first meaningful opportunity to examine the new cars on track and assess the initial direction taken by Ferrari and its Formula 1 rivals.
