Formula 1 2027: driver market opens amid confirmations and uncertainties
Formula 1 moves fast, and while one season is just starting, speculation is already heating up for the next. The 2027 driver market is opening with both confirmations and unknowns, raising questions about who will stay, who will move, and how the grid might be reshaped.
There are a few certainties, and McLaren is one of them. The Woking-based team has already confirmed its 2027 lineup: reigning world champion Lando Norris and Australian talent Oscar Piastri will continue racing for the team. This early confirmation signals a strategy focused on continuity for a squad coming off a successful season. Alongside McLaren, Max Verstappen’s place at Red Bull is also secure. The Dutch driver has a contract until 2028, though performance clauses could allow the four-time world champion to leave if the car fails to meet his standards. His teammate Hadjar, meanwhile, remains uncertain, confirmed for only one more season. At Mercedes, while official details are still pending, it is likely that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will be retained following their strong performances.
Williams has also confirmed its lineup with multi-year agreements, alongside Cadillac, and Pierre Gasly is set to remain at Alpine until 2028. Audi appears to have signed multi-year deals with its drivers as well. Meanwhile, Haas and Racing Bulls have not yet revealed their plans for 2027. Aston Martin faces uncertainty, with Fernando Alonso’s contract expiring in 2026, raising the natural question: will the Spaniard retire?
Questions for Ferrari: what’s next for the Scuderia drivers?
The 2027 driver market remains wide open, and Ferrari represents one of the biggest unknowns. The future of the Maranello team’s drivers is still unclear. Charles Leclerc has signed a long-term contract keeping him at the Scuderia until 2029. However, last year’s results fell short of expectations for a young, talented driver like the Monegasque. Despite his deep connection to Ferrari, Charles Leclerc may reconsider his future depending on the team’s 2026 performance.
Lewis Hamilton faces a similar uncertainty. The seven-time world champion, despite his multi-year contract, is coming off the most difficult season of his career. Should Ferrari fail to meet expectations, Lewis Hamilton’s future could shift dramatically. Therefore, the 2026 Formula 1 season will serve as a critical test, not only for Ferrari, but also for all drivers who have yet to secure a seat for the following season.
As the technical landscape of the sport prepares for its next major evolution, the stability of a driver’s seat has become as much about engineering confidence as it is about contract length. For McLaren, the path forward is clear, but for the rest of the paddock, the coming months will be a high-stakes game of musical chairs. Whether we see a veteran legend retire or a frustrated star seek a new environment, the 2027 grid promises to be a reflection of the sport’s relentless pursuit of the next winning era. The performance on track in 2026 will be the final judge of who stays, who goes, and who enters the history books in a different set of colors.
