Formula 1 drivers could have an unusually clear opportunity to contest some of motorsport’s biggest races in 2027, with the major endurance classics avoiding clashes with the F1 calendar. The scheduling creates potentially important openings for drivers such as Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, both of whom already have links to projects outside Grand Prix racing.
In previous eras, seeing a Formula 1 driver compete in another major event during the championship season was far more common. In modern F1, increasingly crowded calendars have made such appearances rare, with Fernando Alonso’s victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 standing out as one of the notable recent examples. The 2027 schedule, however, provides several free windows between Grands Prix.
2027 F1 calendar avoids clashes with major endurance races
The Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for 30 May 2027, placing it one week after the Canadian Grand Prix weekend on 21-23 May and before Formula 1 heads to Monaco on 4-6 June.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours will take place from 27-30 May, using the same Formula 1-free weekend between Montreal and Monte Carlo. That gives any F1 driver interested in competing on the Nordschleife an opportunity to do so without directly missing a Grand Prix.
Le Mans follows shortly afterwards. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is scheduled for 12-13 June, immediately after the Monaco Grand Prix and one week before the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimão on 18-20 June.
The Spa 24 Hours, meanwhile, takes place on 26-27 June, positioned between Portugal and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 2-4 July. Compared with the already demanding Formula 1 calendar structure, the lack of direct clashes in 2027 potentially gives current Grand Prix drivers far more freedom to consider appearances in other major categories.
Lando Norris tests McLaren MCL-HY at Portimão
The clearest indication that this calendar alignment could become more than a theoretical opportunity has already come from Portimão, where Lando Norris completed a development test in McLaren’s new MCL-HY.
The LMDh prototype is being developed by McLaren ahead of its official FIA World Endurance Championship debut in 2027. Norris shared the test programme with Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor, who have already been confirmed for McLaren’s endurance project, and completed valuable mileage through a series of race stints.
After driving the car, Lando Norris described the test as a fantastic experience. “A beautiful test, driving a Hypercar with so much power and aerodynamic load is an exciting experience. A big thank you to the team, I really hope to get back behind the wheel in the future,” the McLaren driver said.
The combination of Norris’s test and a 2027 calendar without a direct Le Mans clash inevitably raises the prospect of the British driver potentially joining McLaren at the 24 Hours. Such an appearance would give the Woking manufacturer the opportunity to chase another major result at the Circuit de la Sarthe, where McLaren’s last overall victory came in 1995.
Could Lando Norris race at Le Mans in 2027?
There is no confirmation that Norris will compete at Le Mans, but the scheduling removes one of the major obstacles that normally prevents active Formula 1 drivers from participating. His involvement in the MCL-HY development programme adds further intrigue to the possibility.
Interest in combining Formula 1 with Le Mans is not limited to McLaren drivers. Charles Leclerc has also previously made clear his desire to contest the famous endurance race, with the Ferrari driver’s ambition to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans highlighting the wider appeal of the event among current Grand Prix stars.
The scheduling of the 2027 edition could therefore make crossover appearances significantly easier than they have been during seasons in which WEC’s biggest event has collided directly with an F1 weekend.
Max Verstappen could return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours
Max Verstappen represents another major name who could benefit from the absence of calendar clashes. The four-time Formula 1 world champion continues to pursue his strong interest in GT and endurance racing and has already expressed a desire to repeat his Nürburgring 24 Hours experience.
With the 2027 race taking place during Formula 1’s free weekend between Canada and Monaco, Verstappen could compete in the Eifel without sacrificing his commitments with Red Bull.
There is also a potentially significant manufacturer connection. Ford will officially enter the top Hypercar category at Le Mans in 2027, while the American manufacturer is already linked with Red Bull through its Formula 1 power-unit partnership.
That creates an intriguing long-term scenario for Verstappen. The Dutch driver could potentially have the opportunity to race with Ford machinery at the Nürburgring and, looking further ahead, perhaps also at Le Mans. Nothing confirms such a programme, but the alignment between calendars and manufacturers creates possibilities that would be much harder to explore during a season filled with direct date conflicts.
2027 could revive the era of F1 drivers racing across categories
The way the 2027 calendars have fallen could represent an important development for international motorsport. Formula 1 seasons have become increasingly demanding, leaving drivers with fewer realistic opportunities to compete in prestigious races outside the championship.
In 2027, however, the Indianapolis 500, Nürburgring 24 Hours, Le Mans and Spa 24 Hours all sit within gaps in the Formula 1 schedule. That gives leading drivers the possibility, at least from a calendar perspective, to consider major appearances elsewhere without having to miss a Grand Prix.
For motorsport fans, that could revive an element of racing that has become increasingly rare: the same elite drivers testing themselves across very different cars, circuits and disciplines during a single season.
Whether Lando Norris ultimately joins McLaren at Le Mans or Max Verstappen returns to the Nürburgring remains to be seen. What is clear is that the 2027 calendar removes one of the biggest practical barriers, potentially allowing Formula 1 stars to feature once again in some of the world’s most prestigious endurance events.
