Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes are preparing for a closely contested fight for pole position in 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, with Lando Norris beginning the session as the apparent favourite after setting the fastest time in FP3. Lewis Hamilton and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are also firmly in contention after finishing within a tenth and a half of the McLaren driver.
Good afternoon and welcome back, dear ScuderiaFans.com readers. We are live from the Hungaroring to bring you minute-by-minute coverage of qualifying, which will decide the starting grid for the 2026 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Q1 is scheduled to begin at 16:00. Provided there are no red flags or major interruptions to the programme, the identity of the pole-sitter should be known around one hour later. The full session forms part of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix timetable.
Hungarian GP qualifying live: Lando Norris starts as pole favourite
Following his fastest lap in FP3, Lando Norris appears to be the leading candidate for pole position. The McLaren driver is the only competitor so far this weekend to have broken the 1:18 barrier around the Hungaroring.
However, the margins behind him suggest that the qualifying battle could be extremely close. Ferrari is within a tenth and a half of Lando Norris, with Lewis Hamilton once again showing strong pace at a circuit where he has traditionally performed particularly well.
Lewis Hamilton’s history in Budapest has already raised expectations ahead of the session, with his exceptional Hungarian Grand Prix record strengthening Ferrari’s hopes of challenging at the front.
Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes separated by narrow margins
Mercedes is also part of the leading group, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli rediscovering competitive form and placing himself among the principal pole contenders. The narrow gaps seen in final practice mean small details such as tyre preparation, traffic and execution could have a significant influence on the final order.
Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri and George Russell were slightly further behind during FP3, but they remain close enough to challenge if they can find additional performance during qualifying.
Meanwhile, the two Red Bull cars appeared more distant from the leading pace and seemed to be experiencing greater difficulties than Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes.
Will the FP3 order reflect the true qualifying picture?
The main question is whether the competitive order seen in final practice accurately represents the teams’ true potential. Practice fuel loads, tyre programmes and track conditions can influence the times, while the circuit will continue to evolve as qualifying progresses.
With Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes separated by such small margins, the fight for pole position is expected to remain open through Q1, Q2 and Q3. Lando Norris enters qualifying with the fastest lap of the weekend, but Lewis Hamilton and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are close enough to apply immediate pressure.
Follow the live, minute-by-minute coverage and commentary as the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session unfolds and the starting grid is decided at the Hungaroring.
