Formula 1 returns to Malaysia this weekend for the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, with rain emerging as one of the biggest potential variables of the weekend. According to AccuWeather forecasts, the highest risk of precipitation is expected on race day, when the probability of rain is estimated at as much as 90%.
Formula 1 returns to Malaysia
Just one week after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Formula 1 will immediately return to action this weekend for the Bahrain Grand Prix, but with one major difference: the race will not be held at the Sakhir circuit, but at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit. The change forms part of the reshuffled 2026 Formula 1 calendar after safety concerns linked to the conflict in the Middle East forced the event away from its usual venue.
As a result, Formula 1 will return to Sepang for the first time in nine years. The Malaysian circuit previously hosted 19 Formula 1 Grands Prix, making this a significant comeback for one of the championship’s most recognisable venues. Its previous Formula 1 history can also be explored through the ScuderiaFans F1 circuit records and statistics. This year’s return, however, could bring another challenge, this time from the weather.
Will rain affect the entire Sepang weekend?
According to data provided by AccuWeather.com, there is a significant risk of rain from Friday through Sunday. During the opening day of free practice, periods of cloud and rain are expected, while maximum temperatures should remain above 30°C.
Saturday is forecast to be the hottest day of the weekend, with temperatures potentially reaching 33°C during qualifying, although the probability of rain is expected to be lower. The greatest concern surrounds Sunday’s race, when the chance of precipitation is estimated at 90%, potentially making wet-weather conditions a major factor in Formula 1’s return to Sepang.
