The current power unit present on the Formula 1 cars includes a 1600 cc V6 engine and two electric generators to recover the kinetic energy (MGU-K) and the energy produced by the turbine exhaust gases (MGU-H) with rear-wheel drive. On the table of discussions last week, in which Formula 1, FIA, Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, Renault, Audi and Porsche took part, the possibility emerged of still adopting a 1600 cc V6 engine from 2025, accompanied by an enhanced kinetic energy recovery (MGU-K) system and the elimination of MGU-H, while at the same time transforming the traction into four-wheel drive. This last point was requested by Audi and Porsche – taking up a concept already used in Formula 1 in the 1960s by Lotus, Matra and McLaren – adding an electric motor to the front axle.
According to today’s edition of Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mercedes, Renault and Red Bull would be joining forces and would push to continue in the footsteps of tradition, without new experiments. A different approach for Ferrari, represented at the negotiating table by President John Elkann, which would be “open to any solution as long as cost containment and an increase in the hybrid are respected as criteria. So open – even on a possible change in the architecture of the heat engine – that they are even willing to freeze the 2022 engines for a further season, that is, until the end of 2025”.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferrari would see no reason to cling to the current power units, which have not favored other manufacturers to join the sport.
