The first Sprint weekend of the 2025 F1 season took place in China, where Lewis Hamilton took pole position in the Shootout Qualifying and then won the Sprint. Now it’s the Miami GP weekend, hosting the second Sprint race of the year—but first, it’s time for the Shootout Qualifying.
Scuderia Ferrari will try to replicate or even improve on its result in Shanghai. Meanwhile, McLaren will be aiming to assert its dominance again and extend its lead over the competition.
Mercedes hopes to bounce back after Saudi Arabia and score double points this weekend. Max Verstappen, of course, is never to be counted out, as we know he can always make the difference in his Red Bull.

How does Shootout Qualifying work?
Sprint Qualifying is held on Friday after FP1 and replaces the usual FP2 session, while the Sprint race takes place on Saturday instead of FP3.
Shootout Qualifying is divided into three sessions, just like standard qualifying, labeled SQ1, SQ2, and SQ3. Each session is separated by a 7-minute break, with session lengths decreasing as they progress. SQ1 lasts 12 minutes and sees five drivers eliminated. Another five will drop out after SQ2, which lasts 10 minutes. The final session, SQ3, is the shortest at just 8 minutes and determines the top 10 on the grid.
Teams only get one free practice session to prepare the car setup, although they can make changes again after the Sprint race. Tire usage is strictly regulated. Each driver may use only one set of medium tires in SQ1, another set of mediums in SQ2, and a single set of soft tires in SQ3.
