This weekend will feature the Singapore Grand Prix, so as with every race weekend, let’s understand through the Pirelli preview what to expect. The tire compounds chosen for the event at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit are: C3 (Hard), C4 (Medium), and C5 (Soft).
The softest tire range is used on every track that is normally open to traffic. The asphalt itself is different from that used on a permanent circuit. Additionally, some parts of the track (between turns 3 and 9, between 10 and 12, and between 14 and 17) have been resurfaced, so the level of grip will certainly not be optimal.
Official supplier Pirelli also commented on the tire performance for this weekend in Singapore. The C5, in fact, is being considered for qualifying. During the race, we should see the Hard and Medium compounds play a key role. However, the option of starting on Softs should not be ruled out, as last year they provided grip during the initial phase of the GP.
The race is expected to be a one-stop strategy, with teams usually trying to delay the pit stop as long as possible. On this circuit, there is a high probability of race neutralizations. It happened last year on lap 20, when most drivers chose to make their pit stops. A double Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car could, as in 2023, provide an opportunity for an additional stop.
Watch out for the qualifying session, where last year the traffic problem resurfaced. It will be crucial to go out at the right time, as the track will improve significantly as it gets rubbered in.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the weather factor. Singapore is a track where, more than wear-related degradation, tires suffer from thermal degradation. For this weekend, the forecast predicts a high chance of rain, which will add unpredictability to the on-track action.
