Few overtakes, lots of strategy. And in the end, the most experienced prevail: Mercedes performs a tactical masterpiece and triumphs at Spa-Francorchamps, achieving their 60th double victory in F1. The winner is George Russell, the only one to choose a one-stop strategy: a gamble, it was thought until 2:59 PM. But the Briton finds the right path, first outsmarting his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who had been leading since the third lap with a great start and an overtake on Kemmel at the expense of Charles Leclerc.
Third win in Formula 1 for the Briton, who capitalizes best on the strategic maneuvers during the second stop among Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Oscar Piastri (they stop in this sequence to avoid the undercut). The #63, starting sixth on the grid, manages to make his hard tires last for 33 laps: naturally, he suffers towards the end but intelligently uses all the hybrid power between La Source and Kemmel to have good top speed despite Hamilton’s DRS. Certainly a bitter pill for Sir Lewis, but Mercedes can only be proud of the weekend they had, after having the humility to step back with the floor updates that didn’t work on Friday.
Oscar Piastri has to settle for third place in an imperfect McLaren even today: the Australian certainly could have contended for the win with better overall management of the final stages (he goes long in the second stop and forces the team to a 4″ pit stop, additionally losing more time than necessary overtaking Leclerc). Icekid still does better than Lando Norris, once again disastrous at the start: the Briton goes into the gravel exiting La Source and immediately finds Max Verstappen in his mirrors, who then overtakes him with an undercut at the first stop.
