The 2024 F1 world championship is still dominated by Max Verstappen, but with some differences in the drivers’ standings. Last year, the Dutchman won race after race, breaking record after record. In these first few months, it seems—at least for now—that we are watching a more dynamic championship.
We compared the 2023 F1 drivers’ standings with those of 2024 to see the situation after eight races. While the championship has just begun and is still long—there are a total of twenty-four Grands Prix—it is interesting to observe very different situations.
In 2023, Max Verstappen extended his lead, remaining first with 195 points; behind him, his teammate Sergio Pérez was far behind. Fernando Alonso led a competitive Aston Martin, with both him and Lance Stroll in the top 10 standings. Alpine also started the championship decently, with Esteban Ocon boasting a nice third place in Monaco, followed by Pierre Gasly.
The 2023 championship started disastrously for Ferrari. After eight races, Carlos Sainz was in fifth place with 68 points, while Charles Leclerc was in seventh with 54 points.
This year, after eight races, we can say we are watching a more intricate Formula 1 championship. First of all, Verstappen has won five races; Ferrari has stood on the top step of the podium twice, with both drivers; and McLaren’s Lando Norris triumphed in Monaco.
Compared to last year, we see two teams—Ferrari and McLaren—that have made significant strides towards Red Bull. Verstappen has to watch his back from his closest rival, currently Charles Leclerc.
On the other hand, 2024 has started disastrously for Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Alpine (which has disappeared from the top 10 in the drivers’ standings). A significant new entry is Yuki Tsunoda, who is scoring points in multiple races for VCARB.
Below is a table to better observe the comparison between 2023 and 2024 in the F1 drivers’ standings:
