After the 2023 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the tests dedicated to young drivers, which also took place at the Yas Marina circuit, it’s time not only to take stock of the results obtained on the track but also of how much the drivers made their respective teams spend.
With a total of 22 races in the 2023 Formula One championship, the bill for damages inevitably escalated over the season, but who forced the teams to write the largest checks?
The 2023 damages ranking: Sargeant pays for the rookie season
The American driver, who made the big leap into Formula 1 this year, paid the classic price for the inexperience of a rookie entering the top class in their first year, having Williams shell out a whopping $4.33 million.
Especially in the early part of the season, Logan found himself in significant difficulty compared to his teammate, who amassed almost 97% of the team’s total points. Also in terms of damages caused, Alex Albon cost significantly less to the Groove team, with his $2.78 million.
A delicate situation concerns Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard ranks second on this special list, although weighing heavily on his ranking is the now infamous incident during the Las Vegas FP1, with a passage at over 300 km/h on one of the drains of the circuit that caused damages of almost 2 million euros, excluding the power unit.
In third place, we find Sergio Perez, also coming from a terrifying year in terms of accidents. More than any other year, the Mexican was crushed in comparison to Max Verstappen, causing damages of about $3.22 million. In contrast, the Dutchman is last with only $345,000.
Midway through the ranking, we find Charles Leclerc, just below the $2 million mark. The two Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, occupy the fifth-to-last and second-to-last positions, with a total of damages between the two of about $1.5 million. Below is the complete ranking.
