Organisers of this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix have played down suggestions the Formula 1 event could be need to be cancelled due to recent events.
After the Sochi has been permanently removed from the Formula 1 calendar following Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, many have suggested that Iran-linked attacks on the Saudi capital city Jeddah – where the race is scheduled to take place this weekend – could lead to a similar outcome.
Worse still, the most prominent attack was on an Aramco facility, with the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the Aston Martin Formula One team both prominently sponsored by the Saudi oil company.
However, the race organisers confirmed the race will take place as scheduled: “This incident has no bearing on the race weekend. We are in constant contact with the relevant authorities and all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of all visitors as well as participating personnel, staff and media.” – the statement informed.
