Despite the fact that Lando Norris made the headlines by taking the fastest lap on the first day of the pre-season testing session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The British driver took his McLaren car around the Spanish circuit in 1m19.568s on the Soft (C4) tyre, McLaren were actually one of the teams to accumulate the least mileage on Wednesday.
Lap count is always the most important target during this stage of the season, as each team strives for mileage in order to gather data and better understand the new challenger for the 2022 Formula 1 championship. In this regard, there were a few clear winners on the opening day of action in Spain.
Scuderia Ferrari ended the day in P2 and P3 on the timing sheets, but their cumulative 153 laps between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc has given the Maranello team engineers a lot of important data to evaluate.
Red Bull were in second place, with 147 laps in total completed by Max Verstappen, as the 2021 F1 world champion put in a full day behind the wheel the Red Bull car.
Williams, underlining how far they have come in recent years after their testing troubles of three seasons ago, were able to achieve the third highest lap count: Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi delivered a total of 132 laps at the Circuit de Catalunya.
