Lance Stroll earning as much as Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen earning more than George Russell (Mercedes), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri): the ranking of the drivers’ salaries at the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season – data estimated and published by the English newspaper The Independent without bonuses linked to results and sponsorship agreements that drivers have with various brands – reserve some surprises. The ‘front row’ is pretty obvious and is almost the one which we saw on Saturday in qualifying for the 2021 F1 season. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are side by side at £ 40m, with the Dutchman putting this mind-boggling deal in the safe until 2028.
In third place there is Fernando Alonso, who will see his salary figures confirmed – if not even revised upwards – next season when he joins Aston Martin. The renewal signed up to 2025 with McLaren has made Lando Norris climb this ranking: he is the fourth highest paid driver on the grid ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo, whose already very high salary will represent a problem for McLaren next season in view of the Australian’s final year of his current contract with McLaren (it is therefore not surprising that Zak Brown is working to see Oscar Piasti in the car and will try to offer a severance pay to the former Red Bull and Renault driver).
Charles Leclerc is only seventh in this ranking, with 9 million pounds per year and is under contract with Scuderia Ferrari until 2024, a renewal that was signed at the end of the 2019 season. The Monegasque driver is ahead of an interesting trio that sees his Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll all paid with £ 6 million. Lance Stroll, therefore, earns more than Sergio Perez, who recently signed the renewal with Red Bull until 2024. Behind Checo, a surprise: Kevin Magnussen. The Dane therefore earns more than George Russell, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.
Alexander Albon is Williams’ ‘lighthouse’ and has snatched a million and a half pounds for 2022 and the next few years. The Thai-British driver is in fact the last to earn a six-figure salary, given the fact that Guan Yu Zhou, Mick Schumacher and Nicholas Latifi all receive under a million pounds. Last position for Yuki Tsunoda, who continues the tradition of ToroRosso / AlphaTauri drivers that certainly don’t weigh too much on the budget. The Japanese driver earns less than 400,000 pounds a year.
