Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 2021 United States Grand Prix and extended his championship lead. The Dutchman won by 1.3s from Lewis Hamilton: it’s his first win in the US – and he now has a 12-point title lead over Hamilton.
At the start, Charles Leclerc was able to hold his grid position of fourth, with Carlos Sainz between the two McLarens, losing one position after an amazing three-way battle the Spanish driver and the two McLaren cars of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.
Unfortunately the top three were able to break away from the rest of the field, as Charles Leclerc in fourth was already the best part of 10 seconds off Hamilton’s lead in the space of five laps.
The Monegasque driver’s first pit stop was made on lap 13 for hard tyres, with Charles holding his position ahead of the two McLarens. While Charles managed to build a solid gap Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz was slowly catching up to the Australian driver. However, Valtteri Bottas was making the most of his Mercedes car behind the Ferrari – McLaren group to get involved in the battle for fifth place, while Charles was riving a stonking race in fourth, 10s ahead of Daniel Ricciardo.
No major changes after the second round of pit stops, with an easy and solid fourth place finish for Charles Leclerc, who drove a great race but today it was clear the SF21 car did not have the pace to stay close to Mercedes or Red Bull like two weeks ago in Turkey. After making contact with Daniel Ricciardo while attempting to regain fifth place, Carlos fell back and had to defend against Valtteri Bottas and unfortunately in the final stages of the race, the Spanish driver lost his position to the Finn, finishing in seventh place.
