AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has topped the times in final practice at Istanbul Park, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
The early news from the Istanbul paddock on Saturday was that it had been raining and that will certainly spice up qualifying day!
When the final practice for the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix was officially underway, no cars were on track in such conditions. After a few minutes, Pierre Gasly did indeed break the silence out on track by heading out in the AlphaTauri on the full wet tyres, soon joined by team-mate Yuki Tsunoda.
Inevitably, quite a few drivers spun in these conditions, while George Russell went off into the gravel: he wasn’t able to recover the Williams car from that gravel and the session was suspended for a few minutes as a result.
While the drivers initially headed out on the full wet tyres, it quickly became apparent that the Intermediate tyre was the correct choice for the conditions as the full wets suffered from some overheating: after the restart driver opted for th intermediate tyres as the timesheets began to improve with the rain having stopped. Carlos Sainz finished the practice session in fourh place, with the SF21 car that proved competitive in wet track conditions. Charles Leclerc, who had a small moment at Turn 9, ended FP3 right behind his Spanish teammate, with a personal best lap time of 1:31.543, about one second slower than the best lap of FP3 set by Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly
