Formula 1 championship leader Max Verstappen remained on top during second practice for the Styrian Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton had the best overall time deleted. The Red Bull driver led the way during a busy morning session as drivers carried out packed programmes amid the risk of rain falling in the afternoon.
That rain that loomed on the horizon stayed away, aside from light drizzle early in the session, allowing drivers to remain on slick tyres throughout the session at the Red Bull Ring.
For Scuderia Ferrari it was another difficult free practice session, with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz once again outside the top ten in the afternoon after also ending up outside the top ten in the first free practice session at the Red Bull Ring.
An early-session spin for Carlos at Turn Four compromised one set of tyres for the Spanish driver. Into the final quarter of the session and, with the rain seemingly not arriving to any great degree, the Maranello team could then concentrate on the long heavier-fuel race runs, as the Italian side will hope to identify a better set-up to partially fix the tyre management issues encountered last week in France.
The fast lap simulations may not be completely representative for now, but Ferrari will have to look closely on the time difference from FP2, with Carlos Sainz in P11 (1:06.147) and Charles Leclerc two places behind (1:06.270) his Spanish teammate.
