Valtteri Bottas topped the timesheet in FP1 in Spain as Nikita Mazepin once again irked a rival and Robert Kubica brought out the red flags.
Unlike in the past 10 years, the drivers saw the Barcelona circuit for the first time this year as they took to the track for FP1 for the Spanish Grand Prix.
For Scuderia Ferrari, the first free parctice session at the Circuit de Catalunya was rather quiet, as we can not read to much into the final times. The Maranello team did not use soft tyres in FP1: both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc completed most of the session on hard tyres before switching to medium tyres for the final stages of first practice, when both managed similar lap times: the Monegasque driver finished fifth, with a personal best of 1:18.996, very close behind Ferrari’s main rival for the first races, Lando Norris.
Carlos Sainz finished right behind his teammamte, with a personal best lap time of 1:19.020, about fifth tenths slower than Valtteri Bottas’ benchmark time for FP1. However, the four drivers which finished ahead of Carlos and Charles set their best lap times on the soft tyre.
