Lewis Hamilton has won the Portuguese Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen to first place. This result at the Algarve International Circuit therefore keeps Hamilton ahead of his Dutch-Belgian rival at the top of the Formula 1 leaderboard.
For Scuderia Ferrari the race began promising, with Carlos Sainz who had a great start and was able to pass the Red Bull of Sergio Perez. However, after the Saftey car restart, the soft tyres did not help Carlos who immediately lost two places to Sergio Perez and Lando Norris. The Spanish driver’s race was completely ruined due to a strategy mistake by the Maranello team, who tried the undercut and the medium tyre, which did not prove to be the correct choice. In the final stages of the race at Portimao, Carlos was not able to defend against Esteban Ocon and Fernado Alonso, while Daniel Ricciardo and Peirre Gasly knocked Carlos out of the points in the last laps.
Charles Leclerc fought hard in the midfield, but unfortunately the SF21 car was not able to show a strong race pace, both on the medium and hard tyre. Charles tried to close in on Lando Norris, but at not point did he manage to attack the McLaren driver, finished in P6, saving a few points for Ferrari in a very difficult afternoon at the Portimao circuit.
The Maranello team will now try to to make up ground next week, when Circuit de Catalunya will host the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix.
