Lewis Hamilton finished fastest in the second free practice session for the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, although Max Verstappen did close to 0.4s behind towards the end and on the medium tyre.
Back in front of the home Tifosi, Scuderia Ferrari were not exactly optimistic coming into the weekend – fearing this could actually be their least competitive Grand Prix of the 2021 Formula 1 championship
And unfortunately things did not go as planned for the Maranallo team in FP2: another costly crash for Carlos Sainz, who lost control of his Ferrari and smashed into the barriers at the Ascari chicane with 25 minutes to go until the end of the session. Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari was recovered back to the pits, while the Spaniard headed to the medical centre for further checks. He got out of the car unaided, so that was positive news. But certainly not ideal for Carlos before the Formula 1 Sprint Qualifying race later today.
The Spanish driver later left the medical centre, so good news on that front: “Carlos has preliminarily cleared, but there will be another check in an hour’s time” – Formula 1 race director Michael Masi confirmed.
But a big repair job awaits Ferrari on that SF21 car.
Charles Leclerc took to the track on medium and soft tyres to run more race pace simulations and gather important data ahead of the Sprint Qualifying and the main event on Sunday afternoon at Monza. The Monegasque driver finished just outside the top ten, with a personal best lap time of 1:24.770, which was one and a half seconds off Lewis Hamilton’s best lap time of FP2.
