Daniel Ricciardo won the 2021 Italian Grand Prix for McLaren, in front of his teammate Lando Norris and the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.
Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both decided to start the race on the mediums tyres, as everybody had a free choice for the compounds given the Sprint Qualifying format which has been tested this weekend at Monza.
Carlos lost one place to Antonio Giovinazzi at the start, but the Italian driver made a mistake on the exit of the second chicane and was down in 19th place. The Spanish driver then found himself under pressure from Sergio Perez, but despite Red Bull being a much faster car on this track, Carlos was able to successfully defend until Lap 9, when the Maxican passed Carlos after a close fight.
The key moment of the 2021 Italian took place when Max Verstappen moved alongside Lewis Hamilton after his stop and the pair collided at the chicane. They were both beached in the gravel and the Saftey Car was deployed. Scuderia Ferrari took advantage of the Safety Car to pit both drivers, as Charles Leclerc came out in second place, ahead of Lando Norris, while Carlos was fifth, but ahead of a much faster Bottas.
Unfortunately Ferrari’s lack of engine power was clear at the restart, as Charles was not able to defend against the Mercedes power of Lando Norris’ McLaren. The SF21 car sadly could not fight against Mercedes and Red Bull at the Monza track and Charles had to concede against Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as well.
In the final ten laps of the race, Charles and Carlos were running behind Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, trying to look for any opportunity as a result of the fight between Mercedes and Red Bull. However, Charles took advantage of the 5-second penalty received by the Mexican to gain one place in the final 2021 Italian Grand Prix standings.
For Ferrari it was the best possible result today at Monza, but the McLaren 1-2 will hurt the Maranello team in the fight for third place in the Constructors’ standings.
