Max Verstappen has won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, confirming Red Bull’s intent to challenge Mercedes for the Formula 1 2021 World Championship titles. The Dutchman started from third on the grid and was able to lead for the majority of the race. Lewis Hamilton finished second and Lando Norris rounded off the podium places.
McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari’s lead and battle at the top of the midfield was extended today, with Norris and Daniel Ricciardo being split by the Ferrari drivers.
Charles Leclerc eventually missed out on a podium finish after a great first half of the race, but unfortunately the Ferrari driver got unlucky today with the crashes and a safety car at a moment in which he had a solid advantage over Lando Norris. Carlos Sainz finished just behind his teammate Charles Leclerc: the Spanish driver made a couple of mistakes in the first laps of the Imola race, but fought back and regained the positions lost. At the end, just like Charles he was not able to defend against a much faster Mercedes and finished the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in fifth place, scoring good points for the Maranello team, ahead of Ricciardo and Stroll – the Aston Martin driver claiming points after his car was hurriedly repaired on the grid after its brakes caught fire on the laps to the grid as the rain initially fell.
