Ahead of the 2021 British Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari had not won a race since 2019 and Charles Leclerc had not finished finished on the podium in the 2021 Formula 1 season. And the Maranello team came very close to an amazing afternoon at the Silverstone, but in the end had to settle for a second place finish.
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc got off to a great start and passed Valtteri Bottas to take third place in the early stages of the British Grand Prix. Ferrari then capitalized on the incident between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, which led to the Red Bull Racing driver having to retire and the Mercedes driver received a 10-second time penalty for causing the collision.
After the restart, Charles surprisingly managed to stay ahead of Mercedes and build a two second gap during the first half of the race. Sensational stuff from the Ferrari man as the Monegasque led by nearly ten seconds after his pitstop. However, it was full power mode for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton in the final ten laps of the race, as Charles tried everything possible to hold off the world champion. Hamilton caught Charles with four laps to go but it was clear that the SF21 did not have the pace on Hards to keep the Mercedes car behind. Still, an amazing job by Charles to take an unlikely P2 for Ferrari.
Unfortunately things did not go as planned for Carlos Sainz due to a slow pitstop that prevented Carlos from fighting for a top four finish, despite the fact that in the first half of the race, the Spanish driver showed an excellent pace and was second when making his pit stop. Carlos was therefore forced to again fight Daniel Ricciardo for P5, but in the end did not have the resources left to overtake the McLaren driver.
