Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was fastest in qualifying for tomorrow’ Formula 1 Sprint Race, ahead of Max Verstappen and Bottas in the second Mercedes.
For a change, we did not have to look too much at the tyres for a qualifying session: drivers were allowed to run the soft compound throughout all three segments of qualifying – and there was no rule this weekend about the top 10 starting the race, or indeed the sprint, on the tyre they progressed to Q3 on. Simple and straightforward – for once!
First up we had Q1, with Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz qualifying for Q2 without any issues and the five slowest drivers eliminated at the end of this 18-minute segment (Yuki Tsunoda, Kimi Raikkonen, Nicholas Latifi, Mick Schumacher, Nikita Mazepin).
15 minutes of the second session to find the fastest 10 runners for Q3, and the slowest five for sprint grid positions 11-15. There was a gap of only 0.4s between fourth place Sergio Perez and the drop zone ahead of the final Q2 laps, but both Charles and Carlos managed great lap times to make it through, as Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Antonio Giovinazzi and Lance Stroll were eliminated.
In the decisive final session at the Silverstone circuit, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were not completely satisfied with their first runs. In the final laps, Carlos did not manage to significantly improve and will start from P9, while Charles had a perfect lap to finish fourth, ahead of the Red Bull of Sergio Perez.
