Lewis Hamilton won the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen in second and Valtteri Bottas third.
Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos sainz started the race on the medium tyres, just like every driver on the grid apart from Yuki Tsunoda on the softs.
It was a role reversal from yesterday – Max Verstappen took the lead from Valtteri Bottas, while Carlos Sainz lost third place to Sergio Perez. Lando Norris had a puncture after clashing with the Ferrari of Carlos. Sadly, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were defenceless on the straights as Hamilton got past easily after just a few laps.
Charles and Carlos kept their positions after the restart following a Safety Car deployed as Yuki Tsunoda’s front wing was stuck at the first corner. The pace of the two Ferrari drivers was decent, Charles and Carlos being able to stay within 4-5 seconds of the Mercedes of Bottas. Pierre Gasly was the first driver to make an un-enforced pit-stop on lap 27, as he fitted the hards on his AlphaTauri, while Ferrari immediately reacted by pitting Carlos Sainz for another set of mediums. Charles Leclerc also made his first stop soon after, as both drivers remained ahead of the AlphaTauri.
On lap 53 Charles made his second and final pit stop for a new set of hards, followed by Carlos on the next lap, as both drivers were able to finish the race without any threat from behind, with Pierre Gasly in P7 behind the two SF21 cars. A very good result for the Maranello team considering that McLaren finished the race at Autódromo José Carlos Pace with just one point. The Italian side therefore increases the gap to McLaren in the fight for third place in the Formula 1 Constructor Standings.
