Sergio Perez has won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, due to Max Vertsappen having a left rear tyre failure with four laps to go in the race. Vertsappen led the race for the majority of the 51 laps and an accident on the final straight cost the Dutchman the victory. A Red Flag was shown on Lap 48
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc had a good start and managed to keep his position, leading for a few laps, before Lewis Hamilton took advantage of the long straight to pass the Ferrari car, with a visible difference of power for the Mercedes. Unfortunately the race pace of the SF21 was not strong enough for the Maranello team to be able to fight with Red Bull and Mercedes, as Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez also passed Charles without any problems.
Ferrari decided to try the undercut and pitted the Monegasque driver early, but the solution did not prove to be efficient, as Charles did not make up ground and was at a disadvantage in the final stages of the race, when Sebastian Vettel overtook Charles with fresh hard tyres. The Monegasque driver tried to catch Pierre Gasly in the last laps, but the tyre degradation and low straight line speed did not allow him to attempt an overtaking move on the AlphaTauri car.
After Max Verstappen’s crash, the race was restated on Lap 49, with Charles Leclerc who gained a possition after Lewis Hamilton’s mistake. The Monegasque driver was briefly ahead of Gasly for third place, but Gasly took the position back into Turn 1.
Carlos Sainz did not manage the best start and lost a couple of positions, but his race was completely compromised immediately after his pitstop, when the Spanish driver made a mistake and lost control after a lock-up at Turn 8. Carlos recovered to P8, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo.
