Max Verstappen has set the quickest time in the final practice session of the weekend, and the year, at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina. The session isn’t hugely representative of the conditions that will be seen in qualifying and the race, which take place under floodlights as darkness takes hold, but Verstappen used the Soft tyre to set a time of 1:36.734 to lead the way at the chequered flag.

However with the final, hour-long session run in blazing sunshine, and track temperatures above 35C for much of the time, the track conditions will change significantly before qualifying begins in just under two hours’. Mercedes are therefore unlikely to be concerned that their fastest car was only sixth, or that neither of their drivers improved their times compared to yesterday.

For Ferrari the prospects of making it to Q3 look slim: Charles Leclerc finished outside the top ten, in P12, with 14 timed-laps to his name and a personal best of 1:37.270, which was one second slower than Max Verstappen’s fastest lap from the final practice session at the Yas Marina circuit. Things went even worse for Sebastian Vettel, as the German driver finishes his las practice session for Scuderia Ferrari in P14, with a personal best of 1:37.728.
