The Grand Prix of England on 13 May 1950 on the circuit of Silverstone was the start of the Formula 1 World Championship. A plaque over the main entrance proudly proclaims the Silverstone Circuit, constructed on a former army airfield, to be the “Home of British Motorsport”
From 1963 to 1986 the Grand Prix was held alternately on Silverstone Circuit and Brands Hatch. Since 1987, only Silverstone is being used for the Grand Prix of England. In 1991, several chicanes were added to the circuit to reduce speed and to increase safety. In 2011, Silverstone Circuit started on a massive reconstruction of the pit lane and boxes and improved accessibility of the circuit.
Follow us later in the afternoon for the latest updates and results from the Silverstone circuit, as the qualifying session for the 2019 British Grand Prix is about to get underway, with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc at the wheel of the SF90, ready to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull for pole position ahead of the race on Sunday.
