Scuderia Ferrari German drivers Sebastian Vettel has admitted the fact that the faster driver won on Sunday as he was unable to keep pace with Lewis Hamilton in the United States Grand Prix. The Maranello team’s driver made a perfect start to take the lead off his Mercedes rival at the Circuit of the Americas, however, it was short-lived, as the Mercedes driver fought back on lap six and immediately began to pull away from Sebastian Vettel.
Despite the fact that the German managed to close the gap in the first round of pit stops, it was obvious from the very beginning that the four-time Formula One world champion did not have the pace to challenge Lewis Hamilton for the lead while the decision to pit for a second time meant he dropped to fourth. He recovered in the closing laps, passing first Valtteri Bottas and then his Finnish teammate Kimi Raikkonen, thus managing to finish the 2017 United States Grand Prix in second place. Not the ideal result given the Formula 1 Driver Standings, but the best possible result at the Circuit of the Americas:
“I think at the start it was looking good, we got past Lewis but fairly quickly we realised we couldn’t go his pace today.” – Sebastian Vettel explained, as reported by Italian national sports newspaper based in Rome Corriere dello Sport – “Well done and congrats to him. Then we were in no man’s land and towards the end we decided to pit again, get a fresh set of tyres, which was a bit more exciting. But overall not the result we wanted. There was no real secret other than that they were quicker than us. We have to admit that, today in the race we couldn’t do their pace. It is not down to strategy. Whoever is fastest usually has a good chance at winning.” – Scuderia Ferrari German drivers Sebastian Vettel concluded at the end of the 2017 United States Grand Prix.
