Although the Grand Prix of Sao Paulo has taken place since 1936, the Interlagos circuit was not built until 1940, and only acquired international fame when it was redeveloped in the early 70s, when it became the host circuit for the Brazilian Grand Prix from 1972 to 1980. The Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, situated within a suburb of Sao Paulo, the home town of Ayrton Senna, started hosting the Grand Prix in 1990, at a time when the great Brazilian driver was a consecutive world champion and a national hero, and now looks set to be the only Grand Prix held in South America.
The Interlagos track is 16km south of Sao Paulo’s city centre and provides the drivers and engineers with many challenges, not least because the track runs in an anti-clockwise direction and is at high altitude. This technically challenging circuit is very bumpy in parts, putting great demands on suspensions. The many corners are a great test of transmissions and make this circuit very tiring for drivers.
2017 Brazilian Grand Prix weather forecast:
As usual, rain is to be expected at this event, during this time of the year. According to the latest forecast, rain will affect the practice sessions on Friday and also the qualyfing session on Saturday, but the race on Sunday should take place in dry conditions, making things even more interesting, as teams will most likely not have the opportunity to evaluate the track in such conditions.
