Former Scuderia Ferrari drivers Ivan Capelli and René Arnoux fear that the Maranello team will not be able to get involved in the fight for the 2022 Formula 1 season and have raised doubts about the Italian side’s ability to design a strong F1 challenger.
Mattia Binotto has been Team Principal since 2019, when he replaced Maurizio Arrivabene, while Enrico Cardile is the head of the chassis side of the car and Enrico Gualtieri leads the power unit area. The top Ferrari management still trusts them to bring the team back on top.
The Italian side showed signs of improvement last season, following a disappointing 2020 campaign and managed to fight and beat McLaren to third place in the Constructors’ Championship in 2021 behind Mercedes and Red Bull.

However, Ferrari now targets much more ambitious goals and wants to get back to winning ways. The wait for a world title has been over a decade, with the Maranello team last winning the Drivers’ title in 2007 and the Constructors’ one year later.
While the likes of Timo Glock think the Scuderia could bounce back strong in the 2022 Formula 1 season, Ivan Capelli, who raced for Scuderia Ferrari in 1992, fears the wait could still continue:
“The only doubt is that if in recent years they have never found the key to the problem, how can they do it now, without the graft of someone who brings something different?” – Ivan Capelli said, as reported by FormulaPassion.it.
His thoughts are echoed by Rene Arnoux: “I don’t see it as well, because the people who make the car have not changed,” said the Frenchman, who contested 32 grands prix with the Scuderia. At Ferrari we have been behind in terms of technology for years.” – he added.
He does, however, see one up side for the Maranello team and that is its line up for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
“The drivers are good, both at the level of the best,” he concluded.
