F1 circuit layout records
Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Reims-Gueux F1 records and French Grand Prix statistics
Reims-Gueux was one of the defining high-speed circuits of Formula 1’s formative years. Built from public roads in the countryside west of Reims, the French venue was characterised by extremely long straights, relatively few corners and races in which outright speed, slipstreaming and reliability played a major role.
This page brings together Reims-Gueux F1 records including race victories, pole positions, podium finishes, Ferrari results, fastest race laps, qualifying benchmarks and statistics from the two circuit layouts used during its Formula 1 World Championship history.
Reims hosted 11 Formula 1 World Championship races
Reims-Gueux hosted 11 World Championship French Grands Prix between 1950 and 1966. Formula 1 raced there in 1950 and 1951, returned in 1953 and 1954, and continued to revisit the circuit during the following decade as the French Grand Prix rotated between different venues.
The first World Championship French Grand Prix at Reims took place during Formula 1’s inaugural 1950 season, while the final championship race at the circuit was held in 1966.
One of early Formula 1’s fastest road circuits
Reims-Gueux was fundamentally different from the compact permanent circuits familiar to modern Formula 1. Its roughly triangular layout used public roads and featured exceptionally long high-speed sections, making engine performance and aerodynamic efficiency particularly important.
The later Formula 1 configuration measured more than eight kilometres but contained only seven recorded turns. That combination helps explain why Reims became so closely associated with high average speeds and slipstream battles.
Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Reims-Gueux?
The all-time driver rankings above show which competitors accumulated the most World Championship victories at Reims-Gueux. The list brings together many of the leading drivers of Formula 1’s first two decades and provides a circuit-specific view of success during the championship’s early years.
The constructor standings provide the equivalent record for teams, allowing Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes and other manufacturers to be compared through their total victories at the French road circuit.
Juan Manuel Fangio and the first World Championship French GP at Reims
Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1950 French Grand Prix at Reims for Alfa Romeo after starting from pole position. The result came during Formula 1’s inaugural World Championship season and forms the first entry in the championship-era Reims winners record.
Fangio remained one of the most important figures in the circuit’s early history and returned to Reims in later seasons with different machinery as Formula 1 technology evolved rapidly through the 1950s.
Mike Hawthorn gave Ferrari a famous Reims victory in 1953
Ferrari achieved one of its most notable early Reims victories at the 1953 French Grand Prix. Mike Hawthorn defeated Juan Manuel Fangio’s Maserati after a closely fought race, winning by only one second.
Ferrari also placed Alberto Ascari fourth and Nino Farina fifth, underlining the Scuderia’s strength in a race remembered for the intense battle between Ferrari and Maserati at the front.
Mercedes made its Formula 1 debut at Reims in 1954
The 1954 French Grand Prix became another landmark in Reims history when Mercedes entered the Formula 1 World Championship as a works constructor. The new Mercedes W196 immediately proved competitive on the circuit’s long straights.
Juan Manuel Fangio took pole position and won the race, while teammate Karl Kling finished only 0.100 seconds behind to complete a Mercedes one-two. The result gave Mercedes victory in its first Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix.
Ferrari and Mike Hawthorn won again in 1958
Mike Hawthorn returned Ferrari to the top step at Reims in the 1958 French Grand Prix. He won ahead of Stirling Moss, while Ferrari teammate Wolfgang von Trips finished third.
The victory became an important result during Hawthorn’s successful 1958 championship campaign and added another major Ferrari win to the circuit’s historical record.
Giancarlo Baghetti won on his World Championship debut in 1961
Perhaps the most unusual victory in Reims-Gueux history came at the 1961 French Grand Prix. Giancarlo Baghetti started only 12th in a Ferrari but emerged from a close slipstreaming contest to win his Formula 1 World Championship debut.
Baghetti crossed the line just 0.100 seconds ahead of Dan Gurney’s Porsche. It became his only World Championship Grand Prix victory and remains one of the most remarkable debut results in Formula 1 history.
Ferrari dominated qualifying at Reims in 1961
Ferrari’s strength at the 1961 French Grand Prix was also clear in qualifying. Phil Hill took pole position ahead of Wolfgang von Trips and Richie Ginther, giving Ferrari the first three positions on the starting grid.
Baghetti qualified further back but ultimately delivered the victory, producing an unusual contrast between Ferrari’s dominant qualifying performance and the identity of the driver who eventually won the race.
Reims-Gueux pole position records
The pole-position rankings above identify the drivers and constructors that were most successful over one qualifying lap at Reims. On a circuit dominated by long straights and high speeds, outright engine performance and the ability to maximise a lap were especially important.
Historical pole totals can be compared across the circuit’s Formula 1 period, although individual lap times still require layout and era context because both the track and the cars changed substantially between 1950 and 1966.
Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Reims-Gueux
Podium statistics provide a broader measure of success than victories alone. Drivers who repeatedly finished second or third can build an exceptional Reims record even if another competitor leads the circuit’s all-time wins ranking.
The podium tables above therefore complement the victory and pole-position statistics by showing which drivers and constructors most consistently finished among the leading three at the French circuit.
Ferrari’s Formula 1 record at Reims-Gueux
Ferrari played a major role throughout the World Championship history of Reims-Gueux. The Scuderia’s victories included Mike Hawthorn’s successes and Giancarlo Baghetti’s extraordinary 1961 win, while Ferrari drivers also accumulated numerous pole positions and podium finishes at the circuit.
The Ferrari statistics above consolidate those results into one Reims record, making it possible to compare the Scuderia’s performance with its results at Dijon-Prenois, Paul Ricard, Magny-Cours and other French Formula 1 venues.
Two different Formula 1 layouts at Reims
F1DB separates Reims-Gueux into two World Championship configurations. The circuit used in 1950 and 1951 measured 7.815 km and contained five recorded turns.
The later configuration used for the circuit’s remaining Formula 1 races measured 8.302 km with seven turns. Although both versions retained the fundamental high-speed character of Reims, their differing distance and layout mean lap times should not simply be treated as directly interchangeable.
Reims-Gueux fastest race lap and qualifying records
The layout distinction is particularly important when analysing lap records. A faster elapsed time on the shorter early configuration cannot automatically be treated as superior to a lap completed on the later eight-kilometre version.
Race fastest laps and qualifying benchmarks are also presented separately because they represent different performance conditions. Qualifying rewards maximum single-lap speed, while race laps can be affected by fuel load, tyres, traffic and race circumstances.
Jack Brabham won the final Formula 1 race at Reims
Reims-Gueux hosted its final Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix in 1966. Jack Brabham won for Brabham-Repco ahead of Ferrari driver Mike Parkes, with Denny Hulme completing the podium.
The victory formed part of Brabham’s championship-winning 1966 season and closed a Reims Formula 1 history that had begun with Juan Manuel Fangio’s victory 16 years earlier.
Reims-Gueux records versus French Grand Prix records
Reims-Gueux statistics are not identical to the complete historical record of the French Grand Prix. Formula 1’s French World Championship event has also been held at Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon-Prenois, Paul Ricard, Magny-Cours and other circuits.
