F1 circuit layout records
Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Paul Ricard F1 records and French Grand Prix statistics
Circuit Paul Ricard has hosted Formula 1 across three clearly different periods, giving the French venue a record book that spans the high-speed cars of the 1970s and 1980s, a shortened late-1980s circuit and the modern Formula 1 era. Its history includes major French victories, Ferrari success and lap records established on substantially different track configurations.
This page brings together Paul Ricard F1 records including race wins, pole positions, podium finishes, Ferrari results, fastest race laps, qualifying benchmarks and layout-specific statistics. The records focus on Formula 1 races held at Le Castellet rather than combining every venue that has hosted the French Grand Prix.
Formula 1 first raced at Paul Ricard in 1971
Circuit Paul Ricard hosted its first Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix in 1971. Jackie Stewart won the inaugural French Grand Prix at the venue for Tyrrell, with teammate François Cevert finishing second and Emerson Fittipaldi completing the podium for Lotus.
That race began a long association between Paul Ricard and Formula 1, although the French Grand Prix continued to move between different circuits during this period rather than remaining permanently at Le Castellet.
Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Paul Ricard?
The all-time driver ranking above shows which competitors accumulated the most World Championship victories at Paul Ricard. Because the circuit appeared across several Formula 1 eras, the list brings together drivers who competed with very different generations of cars, engines and tyres.
The constructor ranking provides the same comparison for Formula 1 teams, showing which manufacturers achieved the greatest repeated race success at the Le Castellet circuit.
The original Paul Ricard and the famous Mistral Straight
The original Formula 1 configuration of Paul Ricard was defined by its exceptionally long Mistral Straight. The high-speed section became one of the circuit’s signature features and placed very different demands on Formula 1 cars from those associated with the shortened layout used later in the 1980s.
F1DB records the original Grand Prix configuration at 5.809 km with 14 turns. That layout was used for the circuit’s Formula 1 races through 1985, before major changes created a much shorter version for subsequent Grands Prix.
Why Paul Ricard was shortened for Formula 1
Paul Ricard’s Formula 1 configuration changed substantially after the mid-1980s. Following serious safety concerns and the fatal testing accident involving Elio de Angelis in 1986, Formula 1 subsequently raced on a considerably shorter version of the circuit.
The layout used between 1986 and 1990 is recorded at just 3.813 km with nine turns. This was not a minor alteration: the reduction fundamentally changed lap length and performance characteristics, which is why lap records from the two periods should be treated separately.
Paul Ricard pole position records
The pole-position rankings above identify the drivers and constructors that most frequently started Formula 1 races at Paul Ricard from the front of the grid. Pole totals are particularly useful at this venue because they allow qualifying success to be compared historically without pretending that raw lap times from the long and short layouts are directly equivalent.
Individual qualifying benchmarks still need to be interpreted according to the circuit configuration, technical regulations, tyre technology and qualifying format of the relevant season.
Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Paul Ricard
Podium totals provide a broader measure of long-term success at Le Castellet than victories alone. A driver may not lead the all-time Paul Ricard win ranking but can still have an exceptional circuit record through repeated second- and third-place finishes.
The driver and constructor podium tables therefore complement the separate victory and pole rankings by highlighting the competitors that most consistently finished among the leading three at the French venue.
Alain Prost, Ferrari and the 1990 French Grand Prix
Paul Ricard has an important place in Ferrari history through Alain Prost’s victory at the 1990 French Grand Prix. Prost won for the Scuderia in front of his home crowd after Ivan Capelli had led much of the race for Leyton House.
The result gave Ferrari a notable victory in what became the final Formula 1 race at Paul Ricard before the circuit’s long absence from the World Championship. It also adds a strong French-driver and Ferrari connection to the statistical record displayed above.
Ferrari’s complete Formula 1 record at Paul Ricard
The dedicated Ferrari section above consolidates the Scuderia’s victories, pole positions and podium finishes at Paul Ricard across all of the circuit’s Formula 1 periods.
This makes it possible to compare Ferrari’s Le Castellet results directly with its records at other French and European venues using the same circuit-based methodology employed throughout the ScuderiaFans Formula 1 statistics database.
Formula 1 returned to Paul Ricard in 2018
After the 1990 French Grand Prix, Formula 1 did not race at Paul Ricard again for nearly three decades. The circuit returned to the World Championship calendar in 2018 on a restored long configuration measuring 5.842 km with 15 turns.
The modern circuit retained the Mistral Straight as an important feature, although the Formula 1 layout included a chicane that divided the long straight. The return created a third distinct statistical era in the circuit’s World Championship history.
Paul Ricard fastest race lap and qualifying records
A single all-era Paul Ricard lap record would hide major differences between the circuit configurations used by Formula 1. The original long track, the shortened 1986–1990 version and the modern layout each produced their own meaningful performance benchmarks.
The database therefore associates race and qualifying records with the relevant layout. It also distinguishes between fastest race laps and qualifying laps because the two represent different performance conditions.
Why Paul Ricard’s three F1 layouts must be separated
F1DB records three distinct Formula 1 configurations at Paul Ricard: the 5.809 km original circuit, the shortened 3.813 km layout used from 1986 to 1990 and the 5.842 km modern configuration used after the 2018 return.
That difference makes Paul Ricard one of the clearest examples of why historical Formula 1 lap records need circuit-layout context. A 1980s time on the shortened circuit cannot meaningfully be ranked against a modern lap purely according to elapsed time.
Paul Ricard records versus French Grand Prix records
The French Grand Prix has been held at numerous Formula 1 circuits, including Reims, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon and Magny-Cours as well as Paul Ricard. French Grand Prix records and Paul Ricard circuit records therefore answer different statistical questions.
