F1 circuit layout records
Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Magny-Cours F1 records and French Grand Prix statistics
Magny-Cours became the long-term home of the French Grand Prix during the 1990s and 2000s, hosting Formula 1 for 18 consecutive seasons from 1991 to 2008. The Circuit de Nevers produced a particularly rich statistical record during that period, with Michael Schumacher and Ferrari enjoying some of their greatest success at the French venue.
This page brings together Magny-Cours F1 records including race victories, pole positions, podium finishes, Ferrari results, fastest race laps, qualifying benchmarks and statistics from the different circuit configurations used during its Formula 1 history.
Formula 1 at Magny-Cours from 1991 to 2008
Magny-Cours joined the Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 1991 and immediately became the new home of the French Grand Prix. Unlike earlier periods in which France’s World Championship event moved between several circuits, every French Grand Prix from 1991 through 2008 was held at Magny-Cours.
That uninterrupted 18-race sequence gives the circuit a particularly useful statistical history. Drivers and constructors competed at the same venue across the final years of the naturally aspirated V10 and V12 era, the dominant V10 period and the transition to V8 engines in the 2000s.
Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Magny-Cours?
Michael Schumacher established the outstanding victory record at Magny-Cours, winning eight Formula 1 races at the circuit. His success stretched across his Benetton and Ferrari careers, making the French track one of the venues most strongly associated with Schumacher’s dominance.
The all-time driver ranking above shows how Schumacher compares with every other Magny-Cours winner, while the constructor table provides the corresponding record for Formula 1 teams across the circuit’s 18 World Championship races.
Michael Schumacher’s eight Magny-Cours victories
Eight victories at a single Formula 1 circuit is an exceptional record, and Magny-Cours became one of Michael Schumacher’s most successful venues. His repeated victories also make the circuit particularly important within Ferrari’s statistical history.
Those wins were achieved across different seasons, cars and versions of the track rather than during one short period of dominance. The Magny-Cours record therefore provides a useful measure of Schumacher’s ability to repeatedly extract results at the same venue over a long Formula 1 career.
Michael Schumacher clinched his fifth F1 title at Magny-Cours in 2002
One of the most important Ferrari moments at Magny-Cours came at the 2002 French Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher won the race in the Ferrari F2002 ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and secured his fifth Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
The achievement brought Schumacher level with Juan Manuel Fangio’s then-record total of five world titles. Remarkably, Schumacher wrapped up the championship after only 11 rounds of the 2002 season, making Magny-Cours the setting for one of the defining milestones of the Schumacher-Ferrari era.
Ferrari’s four-stop strategy masterpiece in 2004
Magny-Cours also produced one of Formula 1’s most famous strategic victories. Fernando Alonso started the 2004 French Grand Prix from pole for Renault, with Michael Schumacher second for Ferrari. Overtaking was difficult and Alonso initially held the crucial track-position advantage.
Ferrari responded by changing Schumacher’s strategy and committing him to four pit stops. Shorter fuel loads allowed the German to exploit the F2004’s pace in clear air, eventually overturning Alonso’s advantage despite spending additional time in the pit lane.
Schumacher won by 8.329 seconds, turning an unconventional four-stop strategy into one of Ferrari’s most celebrated tactical victories of the period.
Magny-Cours pole position records
The pole-position rankings above show which drivers and constructors were most successful over one qualifying lap at Magny-Cours. Because Formula 1 raced there continuously for 18 seasons, these statistics span several generations of cars and multiple qualifying formats.
Pole totals can be compared across the circuit’s history, but individual qualifying times require more context. Both Formula 1 technology and the Magny-Cours configuration changed between the first race in 1991 and the final Grand Prix in 2008.
Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Magny-Cours
Podium statistics provide a broader measure of sustained success than victories alone. Drivers and constructors that repeatedly finished second or third can establish outstanding Magny-Cours records even when another competitor leads the circuit’s all-time wins ranking.
The podium tables therefore complement the separate victory and pole-position records, showing which competitors most consistently finished among the top three during the circuit’s 18-year Formula 1 run.
Alain Prost’s home victory at Magny-Cours
The 1993 French Grand Prix produced the only home-driver victory during Magny-Cours’ Formula 1 era. Alain Prost won for Williams-Renault ahead of teammate Damon Hill, giving the four-time World Champion a French Grand Prix victory on home soil during his final Formula 1 season.
The result adds another distinctive historical element to Magny-Cours beyond its Ferrari and Michael Schumacher connections and remains an important part of the circuit’s all-time winners record.
Ferrari’s Formula 1 record at Magny-Cours
Few circuits from this period are as closely connected with Ferrari success as Magny-Cours. The Scuderia accumulated victories, poles and podium finishes there across several seasons, with Michael Schumacher responsible for many of the most memorable results.
The Ferrari statistics above consolidate the team’s complete Magny-Cours record, allowing its performance at the French circuit to be compared directly with Ferrari’s results at Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone and other venues using the same ScuderiaFans statistical methodology.
Three Formula 1 layouts at Magny-Cours
Although Formula 1 raced continuously at Magny-Cours between 1991 and 2008, the circuit was not completely unchanged throughout that period. The historical database distinguishes three Formula 1 configurations.
The 1991 layout is recorded at 4.271 km with 17 turns. From 1992 through 2002, Formula 1 used a 4.250 km configuration with 15 turns. Further modifications produced the 4.411 km, 17-turn layout used from 2003 until the circuit’s final Formula 1 race in 2008.
Why Magny-Cours lap records need layout context
Those circuit changes mean that the fastest lap from one Magny-Cours period should not automatically be compared with another as though every driver raced on an identical track. Even relatively small changes in distance and corner configuration can materially affect lap times.
The layout-specific statistics above therefore provide the necessary context when comparing historical Formula 1 performances at Magny-Cours.
Magny-Cours fastest race lap and qualifying record
The database also distinguishes between fastest race laps and qualifying benchmarks. A qualifying lap represents maximum single-lap performance, while the fastest lap during a Grand Prix can be affected by fuel load, tyre condition, traffic and race strategy.
Separating those records makes it possible to answer questions around the Magny-Cours F1 lap record without incorrectly treating race and qualifying performances as identical categories.
The final Formula 1 race at Magny-Cours ended with a Ferrari one-two
The final Formula 1 World Championship race held at Magny-Cours took place in 2008 and provided another major Ferrari result. Kimi Räikkönen started from pole position, with teammate Felipe Massa alongside him on the front row.
Felipe Massa ultimately won the French Grand Prix, while Kimi Räikkönen finished second to complete a Ferrari one-two. The result gave the Scuderia a fitting final chapter at a venue that had delivered so much success during the previous two decades.
Magny-Cours records versus French Grand Prix records
Magny-Cours hosted more Formula 1 French Grands Prix than any other single venue, but its circuit record is still not identical to the complete history of the French Grand Prix. The World Championship event has also been held at circuits including Reims, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Paul Ricard and Le Mans.
