F1 circuit layout records
Different layouts are kept separate where F1DB provides a layout identifier. This avoids comparing lap records from materially different circuit configurations as though they were the same track.

Aintree F1 records and British Grand Prix statistics
Aintree played an important role in British Formula 1 history during the 1950s and early 1960s. The circuit hosted the British Grand Prix five times and produced a compact but historically significant record featuring Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham, Ferrari and Jim Clark.
This page brings together Aintree F1 records including race victories, pole positions, podium finishes, Ferrari results, fastest race laps and qualifying benchmarks. The statistics focus specifically on Formula 1 World Championship races held at Aintree rather than combining them with British Grand Prix results from Silverstone or Brands Hatch.
Formula 1 raced at Aintree five times
Aintree hosted the British Grand Prix in 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1962. Those five races covered a period of major technical change in Formula 1, from the front-engined Mercedes cars of the mid-1950s to the increasingly dominant rear-engined machinery of the early 1960s.
Stirling Moss won the inaugural Aintree World Championship race in 1955, Moss and Tony Brooks shared victory in 1957, Jack Brabham won in 1959, Wolfgang von Trips triumphed for Ferrari in 1961 and Jim Clark won the final Formula 1 race at the venue in 1962.
Stirling Moss took his first F1 victory at Aintree in 1955
The first Formula 1 World Championship race at Aintree produced one of the defining moments of Stirling Moss’s career. Driving for Mercedes, Moss started from pole position and defeated teammate Juan Manuel Fangio by only 0.200 seconds.
The victory was Moss’s first in the Formula 1 World Championship and made him the first British driver to win the British Grand Prix. Mercedes completed an extraordinary sweep of the first four finishing positions, with Karl Kling third and Piero Taruffi fourth.
Moss versus Fangio at the 1955 British Grand Prix
The narrow 1955 finish became one of the enduring stories of Aintree’s Formula 1 history. Moss and Fangio had dominated the race for Mercedes, and the British driver crossed the line only two tenths of a second ahead of his more experienced teammate.
The result has remained closely associated with the friendship and rivalry between the two drivers, but the official statistics are unambiguous: Moss started from pole, won the Grand Prix and established the first entry in Aintree’s Formula 1 winners record.
Who has the most Formula 1 wins at Aintree?
Stirling Moss is the only driver associated with victory in more than one World Championship race at Aintree. He won outright for Mercedes in 1955 and shared the winning Vanwall with Tony Brooks in 1957.
The driver ranking above provides the complete Aintree victory record, while the constructor table compares the success achieved by Mercedes, Vanwall, Cooper, Ferrari, Lotus and the other teams that competed at the circuit.
The historic Vanwall victory at Aintree in 1957
The 1957 British Grand Prix became another landmark event in British Formula 1 history. Stirling Moss started from pole for Vanwall but encountered mechanical trouble and handed his car over to Tony Brooks. Brooks later stopped and Moss took over his teammate’s Vanwall.
Moss brought the shared car home first, meaning victory was officially credited to both Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. Ferrari drivers Luigi Musso and Mike Hawthorn finished second and third.
The result became a major achievement for Vanwall and for British Formula 1 engineering during an era in which Italian and German manufacturers had dominated much of the World Championship.
Ferrari’s strong 1957 Aintree result
Ferrari narrowly missed victory in the 1957 British Grand Prix but placed two cars on the podium. Luigi Musso finished second, 25.6 seconds behind the winning Vanwall, while Mike Hawthorn took third.
Ferrari’s performance that year became the prelude to an even stronger Aintree result four years later, when the Scuderia dominated both qualifying and the race.
Jack Brabham won at Aintree in his 1959 championship season
The 1959 British Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham for Cooper-Climax. Brabham had started from pole position and finished 22.2 seconds ahead of Stirling Moss, with Bruce McLaren third in another Cooper.
The victory formed part of Brabham’s first Formula 1 World Championship season and illustrated the growing strength of the rear-engined Cooper concept that was transforming Grand Prix racing at the end of the 1950s.
Ferrari dominated the 1961 British Grand Prix at Aintree
Ferrari produced its greatest Formula 1 result at Aintree in 1961. Wolfgang von Trips won the British Grand Prix ahead of teammates Phil Hill and Richie Ginther, giving the Scuderia a complete 1-2-3 finish.
The result came during Ferrari’s highly successful 1961 campaign and represents the Scuderia’s only Formula 1 victory at Aintree. It also makes the circuit particularly relevant to Ferrari statistics despite its short World Championship history.
Ferrari’s extraordinary 1961 qualifying performance
Qualifying for the 1961 British Grand Prix produced an unusual statistical result. Phil Hill, Richie Ginther, Jo Bonnier and Wolfgang von Trips were all credited with the same lap time of 1:58.800.
Phil Hill took pole position, with Richie Ginther second and Wolfgang von Trips fourth behind Bonnier’s Porsche. Ferrari therefore placed three cars among the first four grid positions before going on to occupy every position on the race podium.
Ferrari’s complete Formula 1 record at Aintree
Ferrari competed throughout much of Aintree’s Formula 1 period and accumulated important podium, qualifying and race results. Luigi Musso and Mike Hawthorn finished second and third in 1957, while the Scuderia achieved its definitive Aintree result with the Wolfgang von Trips, Phil Hill and Richie Ginther 1-2-3 in 1961.
The Ferrari statistics above consolidate the team’s victories, pole positions and podium finishes at the circuit, allowing its Aintree performance to be compared directly with Ferrari’s records at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and other British Formula 1 venues.
Aintree pole position records
The pole-position rankings above show which drivers and constructors achieved the strongest qualifying performances during Aintree’s five World Championship races. Stirling Moss was fastest in qualifying for both the 1955 and 1957 British Grands Prix, while later poles went to drivers including Jack Brabham, Phil Hill and Jim Clark.
Because Formula 1 used one recorded layout at Aintree, the circuit does not require the same multi-layout separation needed at venues such as Paul Ricard or Buenos Aires. Changes in car performance and regulations across the period still need to be considered when comparing raw lap times.
Most Formula 1 podium finishes at Aintree
Podium statistics provide a broader measure of success than victories alone. Aintree’s short World Championship history means repeated top-three finishes have a particularly large influence on its all-time driver and constructor rankings.
The podium tables above therefore complement the win and pole-position records by showing which drivers and teams most consistently finished near the front during the circuit’s five British Grands Prix.
Jim Clark won the final Formula 1 race at Aintree
Aintree hosted its final Formula 1 World Championship race in 1962. Jim Clark qualified on pole position for Lotus-Climax and converted that advantage into victory, finishing 49.2 seconds ahead of John Surtees.
Bruce McLaren completed the podium for Cooper, while Ferrari’s Phil Hill retired from the race. Clark’s victory closed Aintree’s World Championship history seven years after Stirling Moss had won the circuit’s inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The 4.828 km Aintree Formula 1 circuit
F1DB records one Formula 1 configuration for Aintree, measuring 4.828 km with eight turns. The circuit ran clockwise and was situated within the famous Aintree Racecourse complex near Liverpool.
Unlike many historic Formula 1 venues that underwent substantial layout changes, Aintree’s World Championship statistics can therefore be organised around one recorded circuit configuration.
Aintree fastest race lap and qualifying record
Even with one recorded layout, race fastest laps and qualifying benchmarks should remain separate. A qualifying lap represents maximum single-lap performance, while race times can be influenced by fuel load, tyres, traffic and the circumstances of the Grand Prix.
The statistics above therefore distinguish between race and qualifying records rather than presenting one undefined time as the universal Aintree Formula 1 lap record.
Aintree records versus British Grand Prix records
Aintree circuit records should not be confused with the complete history of the British Grand Prix. Formula 1’s British World Championship event has also been held at Silverstone and Brands Hatch, creating separate circuit histories beneath the same Grand Prix name.
