Nigel Mansell’s feat in the 1989 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring track has something magical: the English Lion started the race from P12 on the grid and took his Ferrari to the top step of the podium with incredible overtakes like the one on Ayrton Senna on lap 57.
The Ferrari 640, also known as the F1-89 with its 12 cylinders is the most powerful but is also the single-seater that brings to Formula 1 the technological innovation of the semi-automatic sequential gear box. The V12 035/5, confirmed in early 1988, represents a return to the origins for the Prancing Horse and was the last satisfaction of Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari Statement “Without the 12-cylinder the Ferrari would not have become ……. The Ferrari”.
