Six races out of six without a race win and just one single podium finish for Scuderia Ferrari, which in this early part of the 2023 Formula 1 championship appeared stuck in a sticky quagmire of many mistakes and poor car performance. The day after the Monaco Grand Prix, La Gazzetta dello Sport analyzes the difficult moment the Prancing Horse is going through, focusing on the decisions made by the Maranello pit wall in the Principality.
The Italian newspaper argues that the Italian side made a serious mistake in the qualifying session on the streets of Monte Carlo and implemented a management approach that was halfway between conservative and daring during the race on Sunday. However, it also partly justifies the Maranello team for showing the courage to take some risks given the difficult context on track.
The Ferrari pit wall stumbles again, Gazzetta dello Sport’s analysis
In an article published on the online edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, which also analyzes the performance of the SF-23 car and the drivers’ performance, we can read: “The last thorn in the side for Fred Vasseur and his men is the quality of the pit wall calls. Unfortunately, the failure to warn Charles Leclerc about Lando Norris’ arrival during Q3 was serious. There is also a good dose of bad luck when the encounter with a following car happens right in the tunnel, at the point of maximum acceleration and poor visibility of the entire Monaco track. However, Charles Leclerc should have been warned more quickly, and this imperfection has come at a very high cost because a penalty of three grid positions in Monte Carlo is a verdict of condemnation.” – the Italian newspaper pointed out.

And things didn’t go any better during the Monaco Grand Prix, as the Italian team took risky strategies that did not lead to the desired results. “The pit wall attempted a management approach that was halfway between conservative (pit stops to cover the following opponents) and daring (the choice to stay out for an extra lap when the rain arrived, hoping it wouldn’t be too heavy). It didn’t pay off. At least they dared to risk, the lesson can be useful.” This last consolation is quite thin, we believe.
“The problem is that the benchmark is always the pit wall of teams like Red Bull, which once again managed not to go into a panic despite the rush to decide between dry and wet tires. The level to reach is that of Red Bull, but Ferrari already knows it,” concludes La Gazzetta dello Sport in its analysis following the Monaco Grand Prix.
