Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli has worked on a new construction of wet tires, focusing on heating and performance, following the criticisms raised by drivers in previous years. These new wet tyres will be available in the next round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place next weekend at the Imola circuit.
During the winter break between the 2022 and 2023 F1 seasons, several testing sessions were carried out to refine the compound, which will be available starting from this weekend.
The new compound can be fitted on Formula 1 cars without the need for tire warmers.
Formula 1 is still considering banning the use of tire warmers on all tire compounds starting from the following season, but so far, drivers have been cautious due to safety concerns.
“A new full wet tire compound will be introduced that will not require the pre-use of tire warmers,” said Mario Isola, head of Pirelli, ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The ban on tire warmers is undoubtedly a topic at the center of the discussion, especially in light of the accident that occurred to Antonio Fuoco with his Ferrari 499P in the World Endurance Championship. Cold tires, in fact, were the main cause of the Italian driver’s skid. This is true to the extent that the Federation itself has decided to hastily reintroduce tire warmers, albeit limited to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The abolition of tire warmers is another step that motor sports are taking towards its sustainability goals, as warmers are well-known energy-consuming devices.
