He drove a Ferrari F1 car: arrested after six years of investigations
PRAGUE (Czech Republic) – An incredible story has come to an end in the Czech Republic. A few weeks ago, local police finally closed a case that had dragged on for years: the hunt for a man who had been driving a Formula 1-style car on highways open to traffic. The driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested in the town of Buk, around 60 kilometers from Prague, after being caught behind the wheel of a single-seater painted in Ferrari colors and carrying official team logos.
The car, a Dallara GP2/08, had been sighted multiple times since 2019, often spotted racing at extremely high speeds near the Czech capital. For years, the authorities were unable to identify the driver, since he always wore a helmet during his joyrides. However, just days ago, officers finally managed to follow the car back to a private property, where they arrested the owner and brought an end to the mystery.
Man caught driving a Ferrari-liveried GP2 car after six years
According to police sources, the arrest came after several witnesses shared a video on social media showing the car speeding along the D4 highway and later stopping to refuel at a service station. Thanks to this tip-off, patrols in the area were able to locate the vehicle within minutes and intercept it. Both alcohol and drug tests were carried out on the driver, but results came back negative. After being taken to the police station, the man refused to make any statement.
The police confirmed that the driver now faces a fine worth several thousand Czech crowns and the potential revocation of his driver’s license. Despite years of circulating videos and photos of the so-called “Ferrari phantom driver” on social media, his identity has never been revealed publicly. What had become an urban legend in the motorsport community has now ended with an arrest, closing one of the most unusual cases involving a Ferrari-liveried racing car on public roads.
