“We must not be under any illusions, Mercedes and Red Bull remain ahead” – Charles Leclerc, ahead of the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix, had tried to remain realisting in a weekend that saw the Ferrari SF21 particularly competitive on the streets of Monte Carlo. The positive impressions from Thursday practice were confirmed on Saturday when the Monegasque driver was able to take pole in front of his own fans. However, Charles did not get the chance to capitalize on pole due a to a mechanical issue on Sunday, which was caused by his crash at the end of qualifying.
Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz finished the race in second position by underlining on the radio that the team and the fans had to be proud because Ferrari in Monaco could rely on a car capable of winning the race. A situation that did not occur since 2019. The Spaniard, however, personally could not completely hide the disappointment and bitterness for a vanished opportunity that will most likely be the only one in 2021 to aim for victory.
The team principal of Scuderia Ferrari, Mattia Binotto, pointed out that the competitiveness in the slow corners shown in Monaco will not be taken for granted in other low-speed circuits: “There will be circuits with low-speed corners where we could be competitive again, but not it is not certain” – the words of the number one of the Ferrari wall reported by Autosport magazine – “Instead of thinking about on which circuit we could be competitive again, I prefer to concentrate on Baku. For now we have always worked well in view of each race weekend, maximizing the car’s performance according to the type of circuit we faced. There are also some updates coming up, not many, but the important thing is that they work correctly”.
