Red Bull’s Max Verstappen overtook Formula 1 title rival Lewis Hamilton two laps from the end to seal victory in a tense French Grand Prix and extend his lead in the world championship. Behind them, Sergio Perez rounded out the podium after a late pass on Valtteri Bottas. For Ferrari, the French Grand Prix ended up being the worst race of the 2021 Formula 1 season, with both drivers outside the points on pure race pace.
Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz got off to a good start, but it soon became clear that the SF21 cars did not have a race pace as strong as it’s direct rivals on this track. As the race progressed, tyre degradation was a major issue for Ferrari, with Charles and Carlos unable to defend against McLaren, Alpine, AlphaTauri and Aston Martin, in what turned out to be a very difficult afternoon for the Maranello team at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Plenty of homework back at Maranello, with Charles Leclerc who finished in P16 and one lap behind the race winner, with two stops for the Monegasque driver who struggled with the tyres. Carlos Sainz completed the race with a strategy of only one pit stop and tried to finish in tenth place to score Scuderia Ferrari’s single point at the Circuit Paul Ricard, but the Spanish driver was not able to defend against Lance Stroll in the final laps and ended up P11 as the Maranello team lost third place in the Constructors’ standing at the end of the 2021 French Grand Prix.
Really poor race parce of the Italian side, as Ferrari now needs to understand what happened at the Paul Ricard Circuit, given that there are circuits coming up with similar characteristics to the French track.
