Ferrari and Scuderia Ferrari will no longer be two distinct elements, not anymore. This is one of the most important news related to the appointment of Frederic Vasseur as general manager as well as team principal of Scuderia Ferrari, a position that has a different title than was the case before for Mattia Binotto, with an important difference.
The former boss of the Ferrari Formula 1 Racing Division was managing director, while Frederic Vasseur will only be general manager.
What does this subtle difference mean? “It is the first sign of the revolution wanted by John Elkann, thus effectively interrupting the Scuderia’s independence from the company” – Corriere dello Sport wrote after the official confirmation of Fred Vasseur moving to Maranello – “This, we recall, was signed by his grandfather Gianni Agnelli and the founder Enzo Ferrari June 18, 1969: 53 years have passed and nothing will be the same again. Fred Vasseur will have a figure emanating from the property above him: today the clues lead to ‘Benedetto’, as Charles Leclerc calls the Ferrari chief executive officer Vigna.”
“The Italian physicist and businessman has a mad desire to compete in sport and he will therefore, in all probability, be the new political leader of the Scuderia” – the Italian newspaper added.
Corriere della Sera also underlined that the new direction in Maranello will mean that the Team Principal role will no longer prove to be the central one in the reconstruction of the Scuderia Ferrari chain of command: Fred Vasseur has been named as ‘team principal’ and ‘general manager’ while Mattia Binotto was ‘managing director’. The Italian manager had more powers. Many speculate that the 54-year-old from Draveil (Ile de France) will play his role mainly on the track rather than in Maranello, where Benedetto Vigna’s sphere of influence is growing.”

If previously Mattia Binotto was number one both in the factory and on the track, now starting from 9 January 2023 it will no longer be the case while waiting to find out if an internal resource or a ‘comeback’ like Simone Resta will be identified at a technical level, to be given the role of technical director, which is currently fragmented by the previous management of Mattia Binotto who had under him Enrico Cardile (head of the chassis), Enrico Gualtieri (head of the power unit) and David Sanchez (head of the aerodynamics).
