Japan issued a tsunami alert after a powerful earthquake struck Taiwan. Residents of the island facing China woke up at 8 am (2 am our time) to a magnitude 7.4 tremor. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it’s the most powerful in the last 25 years.
The preliminary toll is devastating: over 700 injured and 7 dead. The earthquake’s intensity was also felt in Okinawa Prefecture, southwest Japan. Residents were strongly advised to evacuate coastal areas as waves as high as three meters were expected.
Immediately after the alert, flights from Naha Airport were suspended, but the situation slowly returned to normal. The tsunami warning was lifted after a few hours and downgraded to an “advisory,” although fear remains. Residents of the islands, as well as throughout Japan, were urged to exercise maximum caution for possible aftershocks.
In the Philippines, after the earthquake was felt, a tsunami alert was also issued, which later subsided.
