Let’s take a look at the top speeds based on data collected from 2024 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix and the Sprint Race
Alex Albon reached 361km/h!
Williams’ low-load wing gave Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant excellent drag, but little downforce as well. It’s also worth pointing out that Max Verstappen never used the DRS on the main straight in both the Sprint and the Race, which means the Red Bull driver reached ‘just’ 322km/h at most.
Looks like Oscar Piastri had a different setup to Lando Norris. This helped him get pass Charles Leclerc but couldn’t quite get away from him in the corners so the Ferrari SF-24 car stayed in DRS range. However, the poor straight-line speed did not allow the Monegasque to attempt an overtaking move on Oscar Piastri, which also made things difficult for Carlos Sainz in the second part of the Miami Grand Prix, when the Spaniard struggled to overtake the McLaren MCL38 or Oscar Piastri, eventually getting a penalty for his passing move.
We also note that Charles Leclerc was 13 km/h slower than Carlos Sainz despite using DRS for long time as well. How strong (and how long) is the slipstream matters as well: Carlos Sainz got a very strong tow on two laps. If we exclude those two, his next best top speed becomes 339km/h, more in line with the values registered for his Maranello teammate.
